TriMet FX2 - Division

Frequent express is a high-capacity bus route that improves corridor safety, minimizes transit delays, and increases ridership.

Quick Facts

  • Improve travel with safer, easier, faster, and more reliable bus service along the 15-mile corridor that runs from east to west on the Portland Transit Mall via Division Street

  • Connects Portland City Center, Portland State University, South Waterfront, Southeast Portland, and central Gresham, with transfers to MAX Light Rail and the Portland Streetcar at several stops along the route

  • FX features bus rapid transit (BRT) design elements with dedicated lanes, transit signal priority (TSP), 60-foot buses with all-door boarding and boarding and exiting with bikes, ramp for mobility devices, and priority seating for seniors and people with disabilities

Results

  • Cellular technology collects data to track the location and speed of buses, allowing the system to adapt the phasing of traffic signals to give an edge to bus riders and pedestrians

  • Next generation signals prioritize buses for faster trips reducing travel time by up to 20% and improves the reliability and on-time performance at bus stops

  • Improves transit capacity and efficiency because buses are longer, with room for 60 percent more riders; bus stations are elevated for quicker boarding; multiple-door boarding means briefer stops, and stations are located where rider demand is greatest.

  • Improved street lighting, improved pedestrian crossings, and green stormwater management make using the transportation system safer and more equitable

Our Work

  • Provided transportation planning and traffic engineering services for a high-capacity transit service

  • Led the development of a traffic analysis methods and assumptions document

  • Performed traffic analysis and developed two Vissim micro-simulation models and Highway Capacity Analysis at key selected intersections

  • The BRT technology used will enhance future corridors in the region
