Puyallup Adaptive Signal System

Improves traffic flow while accommodating more than 1 million Washington State Fair patrons.

Quick Facts

  • Upgraded Puyallup’s signal system in the city’s downtown core

  • Determined that an adaptive signal system was the optimal solution

Results

  • Supports fluctuations in traffic conditions caused by events at the fairgrounds and heavy rail crossings of Meridian

Our Work

  • Led Puyallup through the systems engineering process to determine the signal operational needs and the associated system requirements for the future systems

  • Prepared a complete concept of operations for the adaptive system following the FHWA Model Document for Adaptive Signal Control Technology

  • Analyzed operations of the traffic signal system in Synchro to determine how to describe the operational needs for the future adaptive system

  • Used analysis to identify queuing issues, cross-street coordination needs, and potential break points for the adaptive coordination

  • Prepared the RFP documentation used to solicit proposals from various adaptive vendors

  • Led the design of the detection and communication improvements

  • Prepared a fiber optic and wireless network solution for the signal system

  • Designed new video detection at 17 intersections and designed cabinet upgrades at seven locations

  • Supervised the acceptance testing of the system and helped perform the before and after analysis
