Olney Avenue Improvements, OR

Reimagines one of Bend’s most important east–west corridors as a safe, comfortable, and connected route for people walking, biking, and rolling

Quick Facts

  • The first curb-protected bike lanes and retrofit protected intersection in Bend

  • Corridor crosses three major barriers, including the Deschutes River, US 97, and the BNSF railroad, serving as a key walking and bicycling route in Bend’s Transportation System Plan

  • The $15.7 million investment represents Bend’s most comprehensive corridor reconstruction project over the past five years, advancing safety, connectivity, and infrastructure resiliency

Results

  • Provides a continuous low-stress bikeway and pedestrian access across three major barriers, enhances safety at a high-injury intersection, and connects residents to downtown, parks, and schools

  • Maximizes funding efficiency and minimizes construction impacts

Our Work

  • Developed custom geometric solutions at the Olney Avenue and Wall Street intersection, where space was limited by existing infrastructure

  • Unique and innovative designs based on context-sensitive engineering allowed a protected intersection to be built within the existing intersection footprint

  • Demonstrated how collaboration, innovation, and community partnership can create safer streets and more resilient infrastructure

  • Showed how narrow right-of-way, aging utilities, and high crash history can be holistically addressed by integrating Complete Streets principles into existing infrastructure networks, providing a replicable model for mid-sized communities
