Redwood Landfill, County of Marin, CA.
DKS was the lead consultant on the redesign of the access road from US 101 to the Redwood Landfill. Under a prior study prepared by the firm, DKS developed a variety of alternatives to reduce the extent of conflicts between the at-grade crossing on this limited access freeway. The preferred solution was the development of a grade separated structure over US 101 that afforded access from the southbound side. DKS prepared concept plans, and a Project Study Report/Project Report for the grade separation project. This privately funded project included the design of new accel and decel lanes to the access points, design of a new approach road to the new bridge flyover. The challenge of the design was limiting the disturbance to within the existing right of way of US 101, since portions of the project front to Olompali State Park. Both sides of the expressway are flanked by significant utiities and we were able to obtain clearance from Caltrans to allow for the utilities to remain in the right of way. DKS prepared several design exception reports, utility certifications and coordinated the relocation of utilities. Another challenge to the project was coordinating the design with the future Narrows Project which is the converson of the existing expressway to a new Freeway. The flyover design allows for future converson of the flyover into a future interchange. The project is currently under construction.

Union Landing Transit Center, Union City, CA
DKS Associates was the lead consultant for the City of Union City for the design of the Union Landing Transit Center. The project meets the short and long term needs of a transit transfer facility with nine bus bays. DKS analyzed the turning movements through the narrow site with access across a retail center. This facility serves Union City Transit and AC Transit buses. Key to the design was providing proper crossing for the pedestrians in the middle of the site. DKS developed a flashing amber signal system to alert buses of pedestrians entering the exclusive transit lanes. Also included were Braille signs for location of bus stops in the facility. An integrated walkway/decorative fence system was designed to discourage jay walking between bus stations. DKS also provided construction assistance during the construction of this facility. The project is operational. DKS was responsible for the Civil and Traffic Engineering.

Lake Merritt Master Plan, Oakland, CA.
For the City of Oakland, DKS prepared the Lake Merritt Master Plan. This plan included a major revamping of the arterials surrounding the park. DKS developed plan lines and cross sections for this project. We conducted the traffic analysis to justify lane reduction. We proposed to Council the reconstruction of 12th and 14th Streets to a simple boulevard. Through our efforts, the City was able to adopt Measure DD, a $100 million bond issue that was approved by the voters. The projects are now being designed for construction.

Town of San Anselmo Safe Routes to School
For the town of San Anselmo, DKS was the lead consultant for the alternatives assessment and design of a new safe route to schools access. This project included the redesign of a Butterfield Road and Brookside Drive to accommodate sidewalks and bike lanes. Along Butterfield Road the improvement included curb gutter sidewalk, curb ramps, driveway aprons, drainage improvements, revised roadside signs, striping and bike lanes. Along Brookside Drive the improvements included sidewalks, driveways aprons and curb ramps. As part of the effort, DKS conducted a community meeting and presented alternatives for the pedestrians. Key issues involving local concerns for traffic and pedestrian safety were discussed. The effort also included meeting in the field with residents and developing solutions for areas where vehicles parked in the driveways overlapped the proposed walkways. We developed solutions for embankment slopes and working around heritage trees for this ¾ mile improvement. The project has been constructed and is in use. In addition to design, DKS performed on site construction observation.

Santa Clara Transit Center
Santa Clara Transit Center. DKS Associates is the lead consultant to the Valley Transportation Authority for the redesign of the existing transit facilities and expansion to a park and ride lot for the Santa Clara Train Station. This $1 million project includes the design of a bus turnout, parking for approximately 100 cars, parking lot lighting and enhanced crosswalks over Railroad Avenue. DKS was responsible for the design of the electrical and the civil engineering site improvements. DKS analyzed the project in comparison to the VTA criteria for platform and parking lot lighting. DKS also prepared the civil engineering plans for the bus pull off area.

14th Street Transit Center - Oakland (14th & Broadway)
DKS was a subconsultant for the streetscape improvement project that extended between 11th Street and 15th Street along Broadway. The improvements included reconstruction of Broadway to widen sidewalk facilities, and bulb outs plus reconstruction of portions of the intersection. Signal modification and lighting was included in the package. Complicating the design was the presence of basements beneath the sidewalk, which required provisions of special waterproofing membranes. DKS was responsible for the civil engineering design of the relocated curb, drainage improvements, lighting modifications and traffic signal improvements. 14th St Transit Center, Oakland The City Redevelopment Agency commissioned DKS to prepare a study of the transit activities in and about 14th Street and Broadway to determine the feasibility of providing and enhanced transportation facility and improve connectivity with other transportation modes in the Downtown area. DKS was the prime consultant responsible for the management of the project, the traffic engineering, and the civil engineering feasibility. DKS was a subconsultant to Amphion Environmental and Architecture to develop and analyze a plan to widen the sidewalk between 13th and 14th Street along Broadway. This project is particularly interesting because the location is a major transfer location between AC Transit buses and BART. The widening of the sidewalk areas would reduce the street width, and result in modification of a bus pulloff area to a combined bus stop/travel lane. DKS modeled the traffic impacts, and made recommendations to modify the signal timing to iprove operating efficiency of the travel lanes. DKS also prepared Construction Documents for the bulbouts at 13th Street, the sidewalk widening, and the traffic signal modification plans.

Petaluma Transit Mall
For the City of Petaluma, DKS was selected to redesign Copeland Street to accommodate a new Transit Mall. The existing street consists of a two lane collector street. DKs is responsible for the redesign of the street which currently has a high crown. Drainage improvements, sanitary sewer improvements and a new 12-inch water main replacement are included in the design. DKs is currently in the preliminary design phase of this project and will be responsible for the final design and will assist the City during construction.

Cloverdale Intermodal Facility
DKS led a multidisciplinary team to design and assist in construction for a new multimodal center that coordinates intercity rail, local transit, and national transit services. The project includes a four-bay bus facility, a new multi-purpose community building, pedestrian shelters, a 100-space park-and-ride facility designed with expansion options to accommodate future transit needs and meet ADA requirements, and a rail platform. DKS prepared PS&E for the transit center and coordinated construction of the project.
