DKS Accelerates its Ranking in ENR’s Top Design Firm List

ENR’s April 21 edition recognizes the nation’s Top 500 Design Firms. DKS Associates ranked No. 404 improving its ranking by 17%. This improvement occurred in a year when more the 70% of the firms listed experienced revenue declines. DKS commitment to repeat clients, customer service and serving to improve transportation solutions for the public contributed to its improved ranking. One of the most significant clients was WSDOT and the Seattle Active Traffic Management System Design Build project which recently installed the first state-of-the-art integrated lane management, variable speed, changeable message system in the United States in April 2010 on I-5 and will outfit I-90 and SR 520 later this year.

Roads and Bridges Magazine has recently published an article prepared by DKS Associates describing the current state of integrating carbon-dioxide emissions analysis into the transportation planning process. Issues such as matching emissions analysis tools to transportation planning tools, standardizing methods that match the stage of project development, and identifying areas for further research and guidance are discussed.

Inaugural ITS America Smart Solution Spotlight features the City of Portland and Climate Trust

ITS America presented the City of Portland and The Climate Trust with the inaugural ITS America Smart Solution Spotlight award this week in recognition of the collaborative use of ITS to improve traffic congestion and air quality through traffic signal optimization. The Smart Solution Spotlight celebrates creative uses of ITS technologies to reduce traffic collisions, congestion, costs and carbon emissions. DKS Associates significantly improved the traffic flow in 17 intersections, reducing congestion and the amount of wasted fuel and CO2 emissions. As part of the signal timing project, the City of Portland improved traffic flow, reduced wait times and wasted fuel, and retired more than 157,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions over a 6-year period.

Randy McCourt Named President of DKS Associates

The firm based in Oakland, announced that Randy McCourt, P.E., PTOE, has been elected President by the Board of Directors. Mr. McCourt has worked for DKS since 1979 having recently served as the Director of Operations for the firm's growing Pacific Northwest operations and has been a member of the Board of Directors for 20 years. Mr. McCourt succeeds Richard Sauve, one of DKS's founders and President of the firm since 1987. Mr. Sauve is retiring effective January 1, 2010.

East Bay Greenway Concept Plan wins 2009 APA “Focused Issue” Planning Award

DKS Associates provided technical and policy level support for trail design, transit and traffic operations on Urban Ecology’s Award Winning East Bay Greenway Concept Plan The East Bay Greenway Concept Plan details a bicycle and pedestrian pathway that extends from Oakland to Hayward underneath the elevated BART tracks. This 12 mile long greenway runs through a diversity of neighborhoods in the East Bay, enabling access for everyone to the recreational opportunities throughout the region. By linking together the many smaller parks, schoolyards, bike trails, and community destinations, the East Bay Greenway will create new opportunities for recreation, public health, sustainability, and community pride.
The project won the 2009 APA “Focused Issue” Planning Award for the state of California.

Jonathan Yee, P.E., is DKS Associates most recent hire in the Irvine, California office. Jonathan brings expertise in Traffic Signal Timing, Traffic Planning/Operations, Traffic Design, and Intelligent Transportations Systems. His knowledge of public agency guidelines, modeling, multiple computer firmware and signal systems adds to DKS' expertise in Traffic Signal Timing. Jonathan most recently managed a complex signal timing optimization project of over 300 intersections. He received a Master of Science, Civil Engineering from the University of Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Science, Electrical Engineering. Jonathan is proficient in AutoCAD, Synchro, SimTraffic, TSPP and Traffix.

Streetlight LED Study Being Performed For Major Seattle Public Utility

The project will replace one hundred of the City’s 84,000 HPS streetlights with LED streetlights, a Solid State light source, and Induction streetlights on City of Seattle streets. This program will evaluate luminaire photometric performance, energy efficiency, economic performance, and the impact on Seattle, Washington, City Light streetlight rates.
The consultant performing this work is DKS Associates. They are working in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), representing the US Department of Energy (DOE), as part of the DOE Solid-State Lighting GATEWAY Demonstrations program to perform this analysis. DKS will assist with project management, quality control, product selection, product evaluation/analysis, development of conservation incentives, development of a maintenance plan, luminaire specification development, national LED street light project update and reporting/documentation.
Over the past several years, many cities, including such as Los Angeles, Raleigh North Carolina, and Ann Arbor Michigan have tested and implemented LED streetlights. The implementation shows a reduction in energy consumption, longer burn rates and significant savings in agencies energy bills.
DKS Associates has extensive lighting experience working with local agencies to solve their lighting needs. The firms lighting expertise in providing design services, standards development, alternatives analysis and training has allowed them to assist agencies throughout the US.

DKS Associates started in 1979 as just a small group of engineers working on easing traffic through Berkeley.
Twenty-nine years later it has grown into a $19-million-a-year transportation engineering and planning firm with a long list of clients.
While the employee-owned company continues to head smaller projects, like school drop-off and pick-up operations, it is tackling major transportation planning efforts, including co-managing congestion reduction on Interstate 80 through the Bay Area for the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency.

DKS Associates Awarded $15 Million Contract from Caltrans to Develop Corridor System Management Plans

DKS signed a $15M contract with Caltrans to develop Corridor System Management Plans for major corridors throughout California. This innovative program supports the CA Transportation Commission’s Prop 1B Corridor Mobility Improvement Plan. The plans explore the role of recent innovations in transportation management including Intelligent Transportation Systems, Integrated Corridor Management and Active Traffic Management among other strategies.

Michael Wobken, P.E., PTOE officially opened a Dallas office for DKS Associates. The regional office will initially focus on congestion management solutions by providing expertise in signal timing, intelligent transportation systems and transit signal priority. Interstate 80 Integrated Corridor Mobility Project

DKS is co-managing the I-80 ICM project for the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (ACCMA). This major project will provide relief on the most congested freeway segment in the San Francisco Bay Area. The project includes the freeway, adjacent arterials and transit.
The goal for the project is to enhance the current Transportation Management System along the I-80 Corridor by using state of the art practice solutions, to build a balanced, responsive and equitable integrated system that monitors and maintains optimum traffic flow along the network, to improve the safety and mobility for all users.
The total funding need for the project is approximately $80 million.

DKS Associates retained as the City of Beverly Hills Traffic Engineering Consultant

DKS Associates has been named the Traffic Engineering Consultant to the City of Beverly Hills. The firm will update the city-wide traffix network and review all entitlement applications for traffic and parking compliance. DKS also serves as the Traffic Engineer for the City of Rialto.
